Join us on Saturday, December 9, for the HWE annual Christmas Concert. This year we will be holding the concert at Newark’s historic Midland Theater. We are excited to have vocalist Laura Portune returning to the HWE stage.
Our 33rd season kicks off on Sunday, October 22, when the HWE presents “Classics and Comics” featuring the music of Jon Van der Roost, John Mackey, Alfred Reed, Michael Sweeney, Pierre Leemans, and Johan de Meij. The concert starts at 7:30 in the Reese Center.
Join the HWEBB on Saturday, July 15 at the Newark Jazz and Ribs Festival st the Canal Market District in downtown Newark. (One block south of the square) The band performs from 6:00-8:00.

Speaking of the HWEBB…we continue to get rave reviews of our May concert with Felita LaRock. We are excited to have the entire concert available to watch again and again via YouTube. The band will close out the 1st Annual Granville High School Jazz Fest on May 20. 13 high school and middle school bands start performing at 12:30. HWEBB takes the stage at 7:00. This will be at the Reese Amphitheater at OSUN/COTC.

Please join the HWE Big Band on May 13 at the Reese Center. We are very excited to have vocalist Felita (Scott) LaRock return to her hometown following an outstanding career as a singer with the United States Air Force Band.
Join us on February 11 for “Colour My World.” We are very excited to have HWE Conductor Laureate Richard Blatti as our guest conductor. All of the works on the program will be associated with specific colors and multiple colors.
Join us on December 10 & 11 for our annual “Christmas In the Reese Center” concerts.
Wes Clark will join us to narrate “The Polar Express” and Brian Hupp will be our guest vocalist.

The HWE begins our 32nd season! Concerts will be held on October 23, December 10 & 11, February 11, April 22 and the HWE Big Band concert on May 13.
Please join the HWE on Sunday, July 3, for the Newark Independence Day celebration at the Reese Amphitheater on the campus of OSUN/COTC. Things get started at 6:00 with local favorites Sticks and Stones. The HWE will take the stage at 8:00 followed by a great fireworks display.
The HWE Big Band will perform at the Newark Jazz & Ribs Festival on Saturday, July 9. Four bands will be featured starting at noon. The HWEBB performs 6:00 – 8:00. The festival will be held at the new Market Square downtown south of the courthouse.

The HWE Big Band welcomes guest vocalist Leon Spencer for an evening of great music on Saturday, May 21, at 7:30 pm in the Reese Center.
Leon was one of Newark’s most popular singers prior to moving to New Jersey several years ago. He was a choir director in the Newark schools and also music director at 2nd Presbyterian church. Leon performed often with The Pastels Big Band as did several members of the HWEBB.
Please join us on April 16 for the HWE “Evening at Pops” concert at 7:30 in the Reese Center. Dr. Mikkelson has selected a program subtitled “Popular Musicals and Legendary Band Leaders.” Selections include “Broadway Spectacular”, “My Fair Lady”, “Mary Poppins”, “Symphonic Highlights from Frozen”, “Star Wars Main Title”, “In the Miller Mood”, “Benny Goodman: The King of Swing”, and “Satchmo!” a tribute to Louis Armstrong.
The Heisey Wind Ensemble extends our condolences to the family of Robert Neumann on his passing. Bob was one of the founding members of the HWE playing trumpet. He also served the band as an assistant conductor.
Please join us on Saturday, February 20, at 7:30 pm for our third concert of the season. We are excited to have Dr. Scott Jones as our guest conductor. He has chosen the theme of “Once Upon A Time…” with several outstanding selections.
We also welcome Joe Glavin to narrate “Casey at the Bat” by Randol Bass.
A reminder that our annual “Christmas at the Reese Center” concert will be presented on Saturday, December 12 (7:30) and Sunday, December 13 (3:00). We are thrilled to have Laura Portune, soprano, return as guest soloist and Dr. David Hedgecoth join us as narrator for “The Night Before Christmas.”
The HWE opens their 31st season with “Music of the People” on Sunday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Reese Center. We are very pleased to have Robert Kerr (Baritone) return to sing Aaron Copland’s “Old American Songs.” Check our calendar page for a complete listing of the selections Dr. Mikkelson has programed for this concert.

Congrats to Newark High School band member Dustin Gourley on having his ticket selected for the HWE Gives Back donation. The NHS band will receive a $100 award from the HWE.
Please join us for our Sousa-Style Concert on February 28. Along with some outstanding band music, especially the Sousa marches, you can hear our guest vocalist C. Andrew Blosser. You will not want to miss his incredible rendition of “Bring Him Home” (from Les Miz) along with a couple of other wonderful selections.
You will also hear Kelly Shellhammer (trumpet) and Doug Moran (trombone) on a duet called “Cousins.”

Please join us for our next concert on Saturday, February 28, 2015. We are pleased to have Jeff Shellhammer return to the podium as our guest conductor. He has picked a concert theme of “A Sousa-Style Spectacular” and we know it will be a very entertaining event.
The HWE is pleased to present $100 donations to the Liberty Middle School Band for our October concert. Congrats to band member Brianna Crase on having your ticket drawn from the 60 students in attendance.
We are also pleased to send a $100 donation to the music program at West Muskingum schools on behalf of 3rd grade student Wes Cornett whose ticket was drawn at our December concert.
Since the HWEGB program was started in 2011 we have donated over $2,000 to area school music programs. More than 600 students from over 40 different schools have attended the concerts of the HWE and HWE Big Band during that time. We are happy to do this in memory of Don Stemen for the 2014-2015 season.
A reminder to all area band/choir/string directors that we hold this drawing at each concert. Along with $100 going to the selected student we will award a donation of $150 to the school having the most students total attending our 5 concerts this season.
